Description of Cooper Mountain | Pinot Gris | 2022

    Appellation: Willamette Valley, Oregon

    The Vineyard

The Cooper Mountain Vineyard, located in the heart of Oregon's Willamette Valley, is known for its commitment to organic and biodynamic farming practices. Established in 1978, the vineyard benefits from the region's temperate climate and diverse soil types, which include volcanic basalt and marine sedimentary soils. These unique conditions, combined with meticulous vineyard management, produce grapes with exceptional character and complexity. The vineyard's high elevation and proximity to the Cascade Mountains contribute to cooler temperatures, ensuring a long growing season that allows the grapes to develop a balanced acidity and a broad spectrum of flavors.

    Tasting Notes

The 2022 Cooper Mountain Pinot Gris presents a brilliant straw-yellow hue with a slight greenish tinge. Aromas of ripe pear, green apple, and citrus blossoms immediately greet the nose, followed by subtle hints of wet stone and white flowers. On the palate, the wine offers a vibrant acidity that frames flavors of juicy peach, lime zest, and a touch of honeydew melon. The mid-palate is textured and slightly creamy, leading to a crisp, clean finish with lingering notes of minerality and a refreshing salinity.

    Winemaking

Harvested in the early morning hours to maintain the grapes' natural freshness, the Pinot Gris grapes were carefully sorted and gently pressed. The juice was then fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks to preserve the delicate fruit aromas and enhance the wine's vibrant acidity. A portion of the wine underwent sur lie aging, with occasional stirring to develop a richer mouthfeel and add complexity. No malolactic fermentation was allowed, ensuring the wine retained its crisp and lively character. The result is a beautifully balanced Pinot Gris that showcases the purity and elegance of the Cooper Mountain Vineyard.
